Highland Area Insight

  • One of the nice things about living in or near Highland is the Highland Recreation Area. The recreation area is almost 6,000 acres or 9.2 square miles. Like most state recreation areas, it has an abundance of beautiful hiking, biking, snowmobiling, and equestrian trails. This all passes through gorgeous woods, lakes, streams, meadows, and natural wildlife. I have seen over 20 deer there on one 2 hour hike!

    One thing that distinguishes this area is Haven Hill, which is the historic location of Henry Ford's country home. It is a little 5,000 square foot cottage that hosted many historic luminaries including Charles Lindburg and Thomas Edison. Haven Hill is the highest hill in Oakland County. The cottage has since burned down but the log carriage house still stands. There are many historical markers and ruins.

  • All this time I have been hiking around Haven Hill Lake and thought I was hiking around Teeple Lake! I had my lakes turned around. The state recreation map link is attached here which shows trails and facilities. Oddly, the map does not show the Ford Haven Hill Estate location which is a historic site. It is located a short distance, maybe 0.25 miles, directly west of the southern tip of Haven Hill Lake.

    If you pull up the Google Maps aerial view, you will be able to see the carriage house and the foundation of the lodge. Haven Road runs to it but is gated off on the way up to it. You can walk the road or there are hiking trails that lead around to the gated off section of the road. The last section of the road that leads up the hill is pretty steep and long uphill grade. We hiked it a few times to get ready for a recent Grand Canyon hiking trip.
