  • Arbor Hills Nature Area is a small, six-acre nature preserve adjacent to the Arbor Hills and Smokler Bolgos communities. It is pretty, especially if your house backs up to it. It is nice to know that wild habitat is being preserved, but it only has one very short path that cuts through it.

    Ann Arbor is rich with parks and nature preserves. I have included a link to their Nature Area Preservation volunteer webpage here. They have a lot of interesting programs that will get you out of your house to commune with nature and people, as well as serving your community in interesting and meaningful ways. Check it out.

    Sugarbush Park
    Sugarbush Park in Ann Arbor is a 27 acre nature preserve that is located in the northeast area of Ann Arbor. There are entrances into it from all bordering streets and communities, which include the Forrest Hills, Windmere, Smokler Bolgos, and Arbor Hills communities. In addition to nature preserve and trails, it also has ball diamonds, basketball courts, tennis courts, and several playscapes.

  • Bird Hills Nature Area in Ann Arbor is a 160-acre nature preserve and has an extensive trail network for hiking. Biking is not allowed in order to reduce erosion. It is Ann Arbor's biggest park and has a number of different ecosystems. It is located near the northwest area of Ann Arbor and has a number of bordering and nearby parks and nature preserves including Barton Nature Area, Riverwood Nature Area, Sunset Brooks Nature Area, and Bluffs Nature Area.

    One side of the park borders the Huron River with Barton Nature Area on the other side of the river. There is a bridge across the river. West Huron River Drive runs on that side of the park so there are no hiking trails immediately adjacent to the river. Unfortunately, West Huron River Drive is one of the few places in Ann Arbor with no bike lanes. Add some bike lanes!
